The BRICS bloc – Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa – continues to grow in terms of population, GDP, geopolitical gravity, and new members. Therefore, expectations have recently risen for a “multipolar world order”. However, BRICS economies do not offer an emancipatory perspective. Social movements from below argue for a future model building on an “anti-polar” version of internationalism, in explicit opposition to both imperialist unipolarity and subimperialist multipolarity.

Patrick Bond is a political economist and ecologist, professor at the University of Johannesburg. He researches African political economy, global justice, and eco-social issues. A sharp critic of neoliberalism and of the failure of capitalist states to address social justice and environmental degradation, he works with social movements worldwide. Amongst others he has held academic posts in South Africa and Korea, and directed the Centre for Civil Society in Durban.
