In this talk I will draw on autoethnographic notes from my work as a composer working with AI to investigate the insights that artistic research can yield into Machine Learning. I will explore critical insights into data gained through the creation of datasets and the training of Machine Learning algorithms in the context of the compositional process and, conversely, insights into musical concepts gleaned from an error analysis of trained Machine Listening systems. Drawing on theory from critical data studies, I will challenge common views of data as “natural”, “neutral” and “collectible” and propose a deconstructive critique of data as material, processual, relational and imbued with aesthetic values.

Artemi-Maria Gioti is a composer and artistic researcher working at the intersection of Music and Artificial Intelligence (AI). She is Professor for Artistic Research in Music at Mozarteum University Salzburg. Her artistic work and research center on interactive compositions – musical works that incorporate real-time interaction between human musicians and AI-driven interactive music systems – and explores critical insights into AI gained through (auto)ethnographies of the creative process. Her music has been performed internationally and has been distinguished with several awards, including an Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica 2023 and the 2019 Giga-Hertz Production Award for Electronic Music (ZKM, Karlsruhe). She has previously held academic positions at the University of Music „Carl Maria von Weber“ Dresden, University College London and the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
